Visit ISKME's Design Lab at Maker Faire where we will be brainstorming, prototyping, and presenting new ideas in teaching and learning. Participants will be guided through design thinking and digital storytelling activities to create Open Educational Resources (OER) that will be shared on OER Commons.

I've been preparing a solo presentation for the 2010 Big Ideas Fest in Half Moon Bay, California, hosted by ISKME--The Institute For the Study of Knowledge Management in Education. I'm especially excited about this, not only because I get to spend several days on the West Coast, but because the conference, or festival, promises to be something special.
Creative thinkers and innovators will gather next month in Half Moon Bay to brainstorm and implement progressive ideas in education at the Big Ideas Fest.
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) a multi-year grant of $750,000 to develop leadership in urban districts. Designed in partnership with the Oakland, San Francisco and West Contra Costa school districts with PLI as the anchor program, the Strategic Leadership Collaborative will support a complement of four programs. Dr. Lisa Petrides, president of the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education will serve as the outside evaluator for the grant..
I was asked to explain why the introduction of open educational resources into the education ecosystem might in fact be one of the most important things that has happened to education in the last 100 years. I guess in centuries before we might have said that it was the Socratic Method, or the advent of public schooling, or teaching to the agrarian calendar.
Dr. Lisa Petrides, president and founder of the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education, recently posted a blog entry that wonderfully articulates the increasingly important roll of the open education resource movement in education. She writes:

As the movement for “open” education resources continues to grow, encouraging educators to share online curricula and materials for free, it’s become vital for ed-tech leaders and classroom teachers to understand the different types of licenses that make the process legal and safe.
