Director, ISKME Labs 

The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME), a global education nonprofit, seeks a full-time Director to lead and develop ISKME Labs, a reimagined strand of ISKME’s work based on two decades of applied research. As a complement to our Open Education Services team, ISKME Labs seeks a Director who will build upon our 20 year track record of social science research, building open and distributed learning networks, and providing thought leadership in the development of research-based models and frameworks for teaching and learning that service and support our open education partners around the globe. The Director of ISKME Labs will play a key role in the evolution of its design and structure. As a recognized leader in information and library science with deep expertise in K-20 educational practice, ISKME’s mission focuses on making education more participatory, equitable, and open, because we believe that the development of equitable and inclusive learning environments will contribute to the creation of a more just society. 

The Director of ISKME Labs will drive and oversee our grant-funded research and the research-informed development of our tools, models and frameworks. The Director will also partner with the ISKME services team, ensuring that the work of ISKME labs contributes to the ongoing development of open source platform tools and services. Research-based models and frameworks developed in ISKME Labs will provide the foundations for the design of professional learning programs facilitated by the Services team. A clear throughline between ISKME Services and ISKME Labs ensures that this work will inform the growth of ISKME with strong alignment around central goals. Ultimately, the synthesis of collective learnings and contributions to new market opportunities are meant to sustain and grow the organization for the foreseeable future, creating new and ongoing value between research and services.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Identify and successfully pursue grant opportunities and leads
  • Lead the research team through the grant-writing process, from RFP requests through submission
  • Manage a team of researchers and related contractors
  • Support and model ISKME’s culture and behaviors
  • Provide coordinate, support, and facilitation of networks focused on open education
  • Outward facing representative of ISKME’s research-based, grant-funded work
  • Proactively seek alignment across the organization and in the broader network(s)
  • Bring a deep understanding and optimism to the changing landscape of open education

Expected Skills and Competencies

  • An adaptive systems thinker who can work within a vision for change while simultaneously navigating complexity in practice 
  • Ease in moving from details of day to day work to strategic planning
  • Leadership style that is based on steering, guiding and enabling team members, growing talent
  • Comfortable in representing the organization’s work at conferences, and with program officers and high level decision makers
  • Ensuring ability to “connect the dots” among existing partners to foster engagement and collaboration in the field
  • Able to guide conversations with funders to ensure alignment with ISKME’s goals
